Prof. Roland (Roli) P. Jakob is an Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon and pupil of late Prof. Maurice E. Müller and was Vice-Chairman of the Orthopaedic Department of Berne, Switzerland until 1995. He then was elected Chief of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at Canton Hospital of Fribourg (1995-2007), a major Teaching Hospital. In 1997, he was proposed Founding President of the newly founded ICRS (International Cartilage Repair Society) and in 2002 he was elected President of AO Switzerland (2002-2009). He is also initiator and Co-Founder of a Swiss Foundation (SETOFF) for the training and the exchange of young orthopaedic surgeons and traumatologists in the main trauma hospital in Eritrea, Africa (since 2003).

His continuous and life-long target has been the endeavor to render the life of the surgeon easier and as well applicable and affordable in developing countries and at the same time making the accomplished work of the surgeon more measurable and controllable, quantifiable and objectifiable, thus going beyond pure observation and rough estimates.

He was involved in the development of a brace for the treatment of a PCL rupture (PCL Jack, Albrecht, Germany) and in the development of instruments for Orthopaedics and Trauma surgery within AO. He is now Emeritus of the University of Berne.
